When I see him I automatically think of MASH, where he appeared four (4) times WITHOUT the dignity of a recurring character. Just: "Hey, we need an Asian, call that one guy... Mako, yeah, whatever."

Exactly. I like that he just went with the one word name his whole career. No need for first names. Or last for that matter.
Mako was your stern Japanese father who didn't approve of your decadent western ways, but who would ultimately be won over by your exuberant American thinking go-get-em-manship.
